I don't propose to write a kernel compilation howto in this thread, but simply to point you in the right direction to get the best performance from your hardware with the least disruption.Ĭompiling a kernel sounds daunting but actually is quite straightforward. The two changes described by BioTube are exactly the ones I have in mind, to change the kernel timer frequency to 1000 and to enable preemption. The changes can be done either in the 'make menuconfig' stage described in that howto or by making a simple edit of a config file as described here I suggest you simply recompile the kernel version you already use and do it the debian way:
